Letters are indexed under the address used at dispatch. Residents whose gallery has since been renamed should bring the earlier household reference. Envelopes remain sealed during an address enquiry. Claimants may inspect the outer routing marks in the presence of a clerk.

Several consignments carry forwarding instructions from offices that no longer receive public visitors. These remain in the returned correspondence register until the originating instruction is clarified. Collection of a letter does not reopen a closed passage file.
